HomeMOVERS VS. BROKERS · KEEP IT CLASSY

The cheap moving quote
can cost you a lot more.

Before you book, know who will actually handle your belongings. A friendly sales call is the start of your research, not the end of it.

Cartons and padded furniture arranged inside a moving truck

It’s your life in those boxes. You deserve to know who is picking them up, who is delivering them, and who answers when something changes.

Our message is direct: ask the uncomfortable questions before handing over a deposit. Compare the company, the inventory, and the written scope along with the number at the bottom of the estimate.

THE CARRIER

The company
moving your shipment.

A mover performs the transportation. Confirm its identity, current authority for your move, and who will handle pickup and delivery.

THE BROKER

The company
arranging the shipment.

A broker arranges transportation with a mover. For interstate household goods moves, both brokers and carriers need the appropriate FMCSA registration.

A broker can operate lawfully. The concern is unclear responsibility, misleading sales practices, or a company that conceals its role. Ask what role each company will perform on your particular move.

Six questions.
Before a deposit.

  1. Are you the carrier or a broker?

Get the legal business name and identifiers. If someone else will transport the shipment, ask for that company’s details and when its identity will be confirmed.

  2. Whose truck and crew will arrive?

Ask who handles pickup and delivery, who you contact during transit, and whether another carrier may become involved.

  3. What inventory produced this estimate?

Compare the actual room list, box count, large pieces, and requested services. A low number based on missing belongings is not a useful comparison.

  4. What can change the price?

Ask about packing, shuttle service, carrying distance, storage, and inventory changes. Get the applicable charges and estimate terms in writing before authorizing additional work.

  5. What happens to my deposit?

Identify who receives it, what it pays for, and the written cancellation and refund terms. Keep the payment record.

  6. Will my shipment be transferred or stored?

Discuss direct delivery, consolidation, storage, delivery windows, and who is responsible at each stage. Ask for the agreed plan in writing.

Surface research and due diligence
are different things.

A recommendation or a polished website can introduce a company. Verification means matching the name on the estimate with official records, reviewing the scope, and understanding the terms you are signing. Read complaint patterns in context and ask for explanations when names, dates, or responsibilities do not line up.

For an interstate move, use FMCSA’s consumer resources to review registration and moving documents. Read the estimate and inventory, keep copies, and do not sign blank documents.

Check your mover.

Prepare a USDOT or legal name search here, then read the current record on official MOTUS. A matching listing is not an endorsement or proof that every required authority is active.
